Hojicha Powder
Hojicha Powder
Houjicha powder, the roasty and nutty Japanese green tea is matcha’s more economical cousin. It’s made using a tea called “Bancha” - a Japanese green tea made from the late summer/early autumn harvest. Once these leaves go through its traditional Japanese-style processing of steaming and drying, the leaves are roasted, leaving an unmistakably roasted, nutty aroma. It’s then pulverized into a fine powder, just like matcha.
It makes for an amazing culinary ingredient. Try it in your latte, or try experimenting with baked goods.

To Prepare:
Take 1.5 bamboo scoops of houjicha powder and place in your matcha bowl. Add 2-3 oz of hot water (75°C) to your bowl. Whisk vigourously using a matcha whisk in an “M” shape for 30-45 seconds. This will help aerate, disperse the tea evenly with the water, and create a creamy froth on the surface of your tea. If you’d like a latte, warm up 8 oz of the milk of your choice, and add to your prepared houjicha powder. enjoy!
